“The Companion” concept for Schiaparelli. Created with old porch screening and glass mosaic tiles.
Inspired by the 1920s fad of wearing living jewelry. These lizards were marketed as “chameleons” that would change color to match a woman’s jacket or bodice.
My wearable art piece captures the twisted intentions of living jewelry. Using mirrors as a medium, it reflects the environment similar to that of a chameleon. However, the slow death of the imprisoned creature is shown through the flaking of its skin, exposing its delicate wire skeleton.
This trend only lasted for a short period, the topic of ethical treatment of animals in fashion is still very relevant today. Although we do not sport live animals as accessories, it still makes me question how did we got to this point?
